Project “Angelus Agro-because we care”

With the opening of the Pediatric Palliative Care Center “Casa Angelus” in the village of Isacova, Orhei district, where children with life-threatening illnesses can be hospitalized for a period of 90 days per year, costs have also increased, in addition to the expenses of arranging and adapting the Center, according to the current standards provided for such institutions.

In order to cover part of the costs necessary to ensure quality palliative care services, offered free of charge to children and adults with incurable illnesses, the “Angelus Moldova” foundation opened a social business.

The “Angelus Agro-because we care” project aims to improve the quality of life of the beneficiaries of the “Casa Angelus” Pediatric Palliative and Care Center by supplementing the need for fresh fruits and vegetables and ensuring, from the sale of the surplus, the continuity of the Center and the Foundation’s activity.

Two greenhouses were created for growing vegetables and greens: one with greens, tomatoes of regular varieties, but also cherry tomatoes, and the second with cucumbers. An orchard was planted to obtain fruits, which will bear fruit in 4-5 years.

The harvest from the greenhouses is already used in children’s nutrition, and the surplus is arranged in baskets, shipped to Chisinau to be distributed to clients, offices or homes. The product ensures a balanced diet for the people to whom it is delivered, especially since fewer and fewer city dwellers manage to go shopping freely and choose fresh and healthy products grown nearby.

At the same time, the landscaped territory is used by children and their companions for walks, relaxation, occupational therapy (if desired), and for learning about the environment.

The “Angelus Agro-because we care” project is carried out by the Hospice Angelus Moldova Foundation with the support of the East European Foundation, being funded by the European Union, co-funded by Sweden, through the East European Foundation.
